  • What is an oral history?
    • Oral histories involve the audio recording of answers to prepared interview questions that collect memories and personal commentaries of historical significance. In many cases, these audio recordings represent crucial historical evidence that would otherwise not be collected.
  • How long will the interview take?
    • Your interview should take between an hour to an hour and a half.
  • How will this be recorded?
    • This is an audio-only interview that we will record and then transcribe.
  • Where will the oral history be stored?
    • It will initially be stored on the Carolina Digital Repository – a digital archive for scholarly materials produced by members of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill community. The main goal of the CDR is to keep UNC digital scholarly output safe, accessible and discoverable for as long as needed. The transcript and the audio will be searchable on the Carolina Digital Repository unless you would like to specify any restrictions. Our eventual goal is for the oral histories to be housed at the Southern Historical Collection at UNC libraries.
  • Will I have the opportunity to review transcript?
    • You will be able to read and approve the transcript or make corrections before it is deposited.
  • What rights do I have?
    • You will retain copyright of your transcript but the public may freely copy, modify, or share these items for non-commercial purposes.
  • What if I start the interview but want to stop at some point?
    • Your participation is voluntary; you’ll be able stop the interview at any time or skip questions you’d rather not answer.
