Call for Applications: Digital Literacy and Communications (DLC) Intern: Photography and Graphic Design Specialist

Job Overview:

The Digital Literacy and Communications (DLC) Lab seeks one digital communications intern to specialize in photography and graphic design. The digital communications intern will help the DLC Lab team photograph and film departmental events, create flyers and posters, and write content for the web and social media. While this position is not paid, students can receive course credit under the mentorship of Dr. Courtney Rivard (Director of the DLC).

Based in the Department of English and Comparative Literature at UNC-Chapel Hill, the DLC Lab serves as a hub for innovation in digital pedagogies by exploring strategies to teach digital writing through web development, social media, and games. Undergraduate and graduate interns support digital innovation through monthly workshops that spotlight successful teaching innovations, consultation on assignments that promote digital writing and communication in the classroom. Additionally, we promote research and teaching advances in the department by allowing students to gain experience in designing and editing the department’s online presence.

This position is ideal for students seeking experience and training in photography, social media communication, and public relations. Strong digital skills are desired, especially with Photoshop and Canva. Additionally, there may be opportunities to participate in digital humanities research projects.

Requirements:

Applicants should have previous experience with some of the following skills, but, more importantly, should be open to learning new skills within a supportive, team environment.

Photography: Applicants should have some experience with fundamentals of photography and willingness to learn. Additionally, they should be willing to attend campus events to take photographs that will used to promote the English and Comparative Literatures advances in teaching, learning, and research

Graphic Design & Layout: Applicants that have some experience with design and layout, photo editing, etc. is helpful. (such as Adobe InDesign, Photoshop, etc.)

Social Media Skills: Applicants should have some experience using Instagram, Twitter, and/or Facebook and to maintain a professional web presence. Familiarity with layout and design tools, photo editing, photography, or project management tools is a plus.

Coursework/Work Experience: Applicants should have some previous work experience or coursework in marketing, public relations, journalism, web design, content development, or project management. Some evidence of your ability to work in a team is also important.
